Frequently Asked Questions

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is the oldest, most commonly practiced medical procedure in the world and is used by one-third of the world as a primary healthcare system. The report from a Consensus Development Conference on Acupuncture held at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in 1997 stated that acupuncture is being widely practiced by thousands of physicians, dentists, acupuncturists, and other practitioners for the relief or prevention of pain and for various other health conditions. Acupuncture has been widely accepted in the United States and has been endorsed by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Individuals using traditional acupuncture treatments often find relief from concerns including headaches, chronic fatigue, depression, allergies, back pain, digestive disorders, joint pain, sleeping problems, infertility, menstrual disorders and other symptoms.

What are the basics of how acupuncture works?

Acupuncture is a component of the health care system that can be traced back at least 2,500 years. The general theory of acupuncture is based on the premise that there are patterns of energy flow (Qi) through the body that are essential for health. Disruptions of this flow are believed to be responsible for disease. Acupuncture may, it has been theorized, correct imbalances of flow at identifiable points close to the skin. Acupuncture treats the underlying imbalances and promotes harmony within the body without injecting any chemicals/drugs into your body.

How does acupuncture help me lose weight?

Acupuncture points can regulate the Qi flow to your stomach, mouth and brain so to decrease your appetite and increase your metabolism.

How many sessions are required to see any significant results?

It can be determined upon your first session because it depends on your chief complaint. Although most leading holistic/medical practitioners recommend 8 sessions, you may experience significant improvement after your first session.

What relationship is there between acupuncture and other medical care?

Acupuncture is concerned with the whole person and addresses itself on many levels of functioning but does have limitations. Acupuncture is highly effective when used in conjunction with other health-promoting practices.

What about the acupuncture needles?

Acupuncture needles are solid, slender - slightly thicker than a human hair - and bear no resemblance to syringes. We use the finest quality, stainless steel, pre-sterilized, disposable needles according to FDA regulations

Does the acupuncture treatment hurt?

The treatment process calls for the needles to be inserted just beneath the skin's surface. Sensations vary from person to person with some clients feeling a dull, momentary ache, tingling sensation or nothing.

What will my visit be like?

The primary purpose of your first session is to gather information. During the 60-minute session your practitioner will discuss your health concerns and have the opportunity to assess the underlying conditions leading to your current situation, perform a physical examination and let you know what to expect when returning for regular treatments. Most patients get an acupuncture treatment on the first day. Follow up sessions usually take 30-40 minutes.

What are the side-effects of acupuncture?

Its side-effects are very rare especially when disposable needles and clean needle techniques are used. Bruises and moderate tingling/irritating sensation lasting for a few hours are the common side-effects.
